We started Moonhands because we believe touch is medicine, and that everyone deserves access to it. As a non profit rooted in bodywork, care and community, we want to roll up our sleeves, load up our futons and blankets, and go straight to where people actually need it. Schools, shelters, community centers… For people in vulnerable situations, being touched with care is often rare, but of great value. It lowers stress, softens the body, brings a sense of safety and reminds people they are worth taking care of. This is our way of making bodywork something everyone gets to experience, not just the people who already have access to wellness.
We are based in Ghent, but travel across Belgium to bring our massages to the groups and organizations we work with.
How it works
Our group massages are given by a team of massage practitioners who set time aside to volunteer and be of service. In a safe, gentle setting, we create a moment of care and stillness, just with our hands and our attention. We believe the biggest medicine is already inside every one of us. We are just here to help people find their way back to it.
Every session takes place fully clothed, with plenty of blankets and cushions, in an atmosphere built to be as trauma sensitive as possible. Our practitioners draw from different techniques including Thai massage, Zenthai Shiatsu, energy work, Reiki, Rebozo and relaxation massage, adapting each session to the person and the setting. Through gentle touch, presence and attention, we work not only on physical relaxation but above all on creating a warm, safe cocoon where people can fully let go.
